Alphabet Q3 2026 Earnings: Google Says AI Mode Earns Less, and Is Putting Ads In It. What That Means for SEO, AEO and Google Ads

Search grew 12%, down from 17% the quarter before, and Google named AI Mode's lower ad revenue as one reason. Its answer is more ads inside AI answers, now in Canada, Australia and eight other countries. Here is what the quarter changes for people who buy Google ads and for people who need organic clicks.

The quarter in one answer

The most useful minute of Alphabet's third-quarter call on 28 October came in the questions. JPMorgan's Doug Anmuth asked why Search had slowed, and Philipp Schindler, Google's chief business officer, listed three reasons. The third was AI Mode: its queries were growing fast, and Schindler pointed to "the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode." It was the first time Google had told investors, in plain terms, that the AI version of search earns less than the old one.

The numbers around that answer were not a crisis. Alphabet's earnings release put Google Search & other revenue at $63.35 billion, up 12% on a year earlier. But growth had been 19% in the first quarter and 17% in the second, and Search took in only $79 million more than it did in Q2. Fortune reported the shares fell more than 11% after hours, with analysts having expected Search to grow about 15%.

For anyone who buys Google ads or depends on organic traffic, the quarter comes down to one tension. AI Mode is where search is growing, it pays Google less per query, and Google's response is to put more ads into AI answers. Advertisers get new inventory they cannot switch off or measure on its own. Sites that live on organic clicks get a results page with even less room for them.

The Q3 2026 numbers that matter for search marketers

The figures below come from the release and from the 10-Q Alphabet filed on 29 October, which is where Google reports paid clicks and cost per click. Q2 2026 and Q3 2025 are there for comparison.

MetricQ3 2026Q2 2026Q3 2025
Google Search & other revenue$63.35B (+12%)$63.27B (+17%)$56.57B
Paid clicks, year over year+8%+13%+7%
Cost per click, year over year+4%+3%+7%
YouTube ads revenue$11.21B (+9%)$11.06B (+13%)$10.26B
Google Network revenue$7.46B (+1%)$7.30B$7.35B
Traffic acquisition costs$16.37B (+10%)$16.18B$14.88B
Google Cloud revenue$30.71B (+103%)$24.77B (+82%)$15.16B
Capital expenditure$51.36B$44.92B$23.95B

Two lines matter most to advertisers. Paid clicks grew 8%, down from 13% a quarter earlier, while cost per click rose 4%, about where it has sat all year. Google sold fewer extra clicks and charged a little more for each one. Over the first nine months of 2026, paid clicks were up 11% and cost per click 4%.

Publishers should look at the Network line. Google Network revenue rose 1%, but the 10-Q says that came from AdMob and was partly offset by falling AdSense revenue, and Network impressions dropped 14%. For publishers that rely on AdSense, that is a second squeeze alongside fewer organic clicks.

Why Google Search growth slowed

It would be easy to read the quarter as AI Mode eating Google's ad business. Google's own explanation is more mixed, and none of it came with numbers. According to the official call transcript, Schindler called currency the single largest reason for the slowdown from Q2. Schindler then pointed to some Asia-Pacific retail advertisers hit by the end of the EU's duty-free threshold for small parcels, and to media and entertainment spending settling down after a World Cup lift in Q2. AI Mode's lower monetization came third.

CFO Anat Ashkenazi added a fourth factor: Search was lapping its own acceleration in late 2025, which the CFO said cost about three points of growth this quarter, with a couple more points to come in Q4. Ashkenazi also expects a slightly bigger currency headwind in Q4, mostly in Search and YouTube ads.

Put together, AI Mode is one cause among several, and Google chose not to say how large. What is new is that Google said it at all. On earlier calls Google talked about AI features growing usage. This quarter the company conceded that the usage they grow is, for now, worth less.

What changes in Google Ads: AI Mode ads you cannot switch off

Google's fix for lower monetization is inventory. On the call Schindler said Google is scaling ads inside AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries. The same day, a Google Ads post by Shashi Thakur said ads in AI Mode are now scaling in 10 countries: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Brazil, Mexico and the UK are among the markets planned for Q4. In the US, ads are launching in follow-up questions, so a conversation in AI Mode can show an ad on its second or third turn.

The rules that matter are in Google's help page on ads in AI-powered experiences, and they are worth reading before the next budget review:

  • Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns serve in AI Overviews and AI Mode automatically.
  • You cannot opt out of these placements separately, and you cannot target them on their own.
  • Broad match and AI Max for Search can match on context from the AI response. Exact and phrase match only match direct commercial queries.
  • Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
  • Results are folded into the standard campaign and search terms reports, with no separate line for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Read together, those rules mean an account running broad match or AI Max is already buying clicks from AI answers, matched on a context the advertiser never typed, and reported in the same rows as everything else. Google says the clicks are good. Its post claims click-through rates for sponsored and organic product listings inside AI Mode are already similar, based on Google's internal US data from 20 August to 3 September. That is Google measuring its own product over two weeks, so treat it as a claim to test.

The practical response is the one that already worked: read the search terms report more often, and watch what broad match and AI Max are matching. Context-matched queries from AI conversations are likely to be longer and stranger than typed ones, and some of them will be exactly the spend that never converts. Our guide to finding wasted spend without blocking the searches that pay covers how to price that before you add a negative. Advertisers in Canada and Australia should expect this traffic in their reports already.

What changes for SEO and AEO: more searches, fewer clicks per search

For organic search the call held one encouraging number and one worrying silence. The encouraging number: Sundar Pichai said year-over-year query growth is the highest in five years, and that AI investments are driving it, commercial queries included. Google gave no rate. AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches, and one in five AI Mode searches uses voice, images or documents. Pichai also said Google is building one experience across AI Overviews, AI Mode and traditional Search, which suggests the line between the AI answer and the ten blue links will keep blurring.

The silence: in Q2 Pichai said Google was sending billions of clicks to websites every week through its AI features. In Q3 the release, the remarks and the full call contain no figure or comment on clicks to websites at all.

Independent studies fill some of that gap, and they point the same way. Pew Research found people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Ahrefs found an AI Overview went with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranked page. Seer Interactive measured organic click-through of 2.36% on queries with an AI Overview against 3.82% without in February 2026, after a partial rebound. None of them measures AI Mode on its own, and all three are correlations.

Seer's data also holds the most useful finding for AEO. On informational queries in 2025, brands cited inside the AI Overview got 2.07% organic click-through, against 0.94% for brands that were not cited. When the answer sits on Google's page, being one of its sources is the difference between some clicks and almost none. That is the work our guide to AIO, AEO and GEO covers, and it is the same pattern our study of who ChatGPT recommends found outside Google: a short list of sources gets the visit, and everyone else gets a mention at best.

Pichai framed the strategy with an old comparison. As with the shift to mobile, Pichai said, Google is putting the search experience first and monetization second. On mobile, monetization did catch up. If AI Mode follows the same path, the room left for organic results inside AI answers is the part most likely to shrink.

Why Google needs AI Mode to pay

The rest of the report explains the urgency. Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to $30.71 billion, and its operating margin rose to 36.2% from 23.7%. Alphabet spent $51.36 billion on capital expenditure in the quarter, more than twice the $23.95 billion of a year earlier, and free cash flow was negative $9.07 billion. Ashkenazi kept 2026 capex guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion and said 2027 spending will increase significantly, with details on the fourth-quarter call. Earnings per share fell 26% to $2.12, mostly because of an $8.66 billion loss on equity holdings, which the CFO attributed mainly to Alphabet's stake in SpaceX.

A company spending at that rate on AI infrastructure cannot leave its fastest-growing search surface earning less than the one it replaces. For marketers, the open questions are how quickly AI Mode will carry more ads, and whether the clicks sold there are worth what the old ones were.

What to do with this before Q4

If you run Google Ads, assume AI Mode traffic is already in your account if you advertise in one of the 10 countries or use broad match or AI Max anywhere. Review search terms weekly rather than monthly, look for long conversational queries, and price any you block against the converting searches the same negative would catch. Watch cost per click: it rose 4% across Google this quarter, and the account you manage may not match the average.

If you depend on organic search, measure clicks against impressions by query length in Search Console. Longer queries are where AI Mode lives, and where impressions can rise while clicks stay flat. Check whether your pages are cited in AI Overviews for your most valuable commercial searches, because Seer's numbers say the citation is now worth roughly double the click-through of not being cited. And if you bid on terms you already rank for, test it again: the organic click you were protecting may now sit below an AI answer and an ad.

Google told investors this quarter that AI Mode earns less. Over the next few quarters, the place it will look to earn more is the page your customers search on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much did Google Search make in Q3 2026?

Google Search & other revenue was $63.35 billion in the quarter ended 30 September 2026, up 12% from $56.57 billion a year earlier, according to Alphabet's earnings release on 28 October 2026. Growth slowed from 17% in Q2 and 19% in Q1, and revenue was almost flat against Q2's $63.27 billion.

Why did Google Search growth slow in Q3 2026?

On the earnings call Philipp Schindler gave three reasons: currency effects, which Schindler called the largest; weaker spending in some retail and media categories; and lower monetization in AI Mode as AI Mode queries grew. Google did not put a number on any of them. The CFO added that Search was lapping a strong late-2025, which cost about three points of growth.

Did Google paid clicks and cost per click go up in Q3 2026?

Yes. Alphabet's 10-Q, filed 29 October 2026, says paid clicks on Google Search & other rose 8% year over year and cost per click rose 4%. In Q2 2026 paid clicks grew 13% and cost per click 3%.

Are Google Ads shown in AI Mode?

Yes. Google said on 28 October 2026 that ads in AI Mode are scaling in 10 countries, including Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand, with more planned in Q4 including Brazil, Mexico and the UK, and that ads in follow-up questions are launching in the US. Google's help page says existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns serve there automatically, and advertisers cannot opt out of those placements separately.

Can I see AI Mode ad performance separately in Google Ads?

No. Google's help page on ads in AI-powered experiences says reporting is folded into the standard campaign and search terms reports, with no separate breakout for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
